Non-Contact Laser Ultrasound Detection of Internal Gas Defects in Lithium-Ion Batteries

• Gas defects in Lithium-Ion Batteries reduce their capacity and increase their internal resistance by loss of active material.
• This paper demonstrates the contact-free ultrasonic inspection of gas defects in pouch cells using XARION's Optical Microphone.
• Results show that C-Scans generated by XARION match the resolution of contact-based scanning acoustic microscopy.
